Our SharePoint-Videos dot com virtual development environment, in entirety, is now available through an offer from CloudShare. This environment includes virtual instances of:
- SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise
- SQL Server 2008 R2
- Microsoft Office 2010 Professional
- SharePoint Designer 2010
- SharePoint Workspace 2010 and
- Visual Studio 2010
We are offering the developer community focused on SharePoint and related platforms access to our environment as we maintain it at CloudShare. We have included documentation of all of the demonstrations that are included in the environment. We note that all of the demonstrations are already built and functional; therefore, if you simply require access to our demonstrations, then a CloudShare Pro account as per the above mentioned offer is a great way of accessing them.
For developers with an interest in learning how we built each of our demonstrations, we have included links to the respective video tutorials from SharePoint-Videos that present all of the steps included in the production of each of the demonstrations.
A virtual environment like Asif’s environment is particularly useful for software developers for two important reasons. On the one hand, the cost of acquiring the various components required to develop intended functionality is, usually, much more expensive than is the cost of using a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution like Cloudshare to obtain the same components. Of course, an SaaS subscription can usually be terminated subsequent to some notice period, therefore, the actual hard costs for what amounts to leasing the components simply for a development requirement can, potentially, be even less than is the case where a subscription to an SaaS environment for development is undertaken on a full time basis.
On the other hand, by availing of a SaaS offer a production environment is correctly insulated from any risk that may arise from a development effort. The value represented by exercising this level of protection for a production environment is, in our estimation, even greater than development cost reductions alluded to in the above paragraph. Production environments are usually made up of heavily tested components, some of which may have required an expensive refinement process of multiple revisions. Therefore, the cost of inadvertently destroying production components through an early stage effort to develop simply one new component can be very high. We think it makes complete sense, wherever possible to segregate development efforts from production.
