An Overview of No Code Solutions for SharePoint 2013

On Thursday, February 20, 2014, SharePoint-Videos.com hosted a free-of-charge webinar on no-code solution options. As I’ve written recently in this blog, large communities of SharePoint 2013 users can avail of these approaches to attempt to capture substantial return on their investment in SharePoint. The no-code development tools included with SharePoint 2013 (SharePoint Designer 2013, browser tools, and InfoPath 2013) and, perhaps, Visio on the desktop, can actually empower these users to build a very wide range of processes on top of SharePoint, including, but not limited to:

  • An audit trail for document/loan/distribution/purchase/(you name it) approvals
  • An automatic method of alerting teams about new events
  • An induction process for new hires

This webinar was led by Asif Rehmani, SharePoint MVP (and the owner of SharePoint-Videos.com), and Mark Gillis, a writer for Microsoft and curator of Microsoft’s no-code website. Anyone interested in this webinar, with a bit more than an hour to spare, can watch a recording of it on SharePoint-Videos.com.

I recommend SharePoint stakeholders add this webinar to a “must see” list, if they have one. In merely the first 5 minutes of the recording, Mark Gillis presents a portrait of the type of “Power User” Microsoft intended to service with the no-code development features included in SharePoint. What’s important, for me, in this portrait, is the pointers it provides to stakeholders. The type of user who has a lot of ” . . . technical expertise, understands business needs, and does not code for a living . . . ” (quoted from Mark Gillis’ slides, as presented in the webinar), is often located in a Line of Business (Lob) department. Remember, this person ” . . . does not code for a living . . . “, but “understands business needs”.

Of course, it’s precisely these power users coming from LoBs who can make the critically important decision to adopt SharePoint and, thereby, push an enterprise implementation plan for the platform into a successful undertaking. I can’t overstate the value to be found by building into SharePoint precisely the features LoBs need to 1) lower their own cost of systems development, while 2) they improve the quality of their collaboration with a central IT organization and their peers across an enterprise.
