Adding an Index and a Loop Finishes Up our Workflow that Pulls Information from an RSS Feed into a Custom List in SharePoint 2013

This is our final post on a video tutorial authored by Asif Rehmani, SharePoint MVP and MCT, Pull info from a Blog’s RSS feed using SharePoint Designer 2013 Workflow.

In the final 10 minutes of this video training course, Asif Rehmani demonstrates how to build an index of the data that will be pulled from the dictionaries of the information pulled into SharePoint through a series of GET actions. Some of the details of these GET actions were presented in prior posts to this blog on this same video training class. The index is simply another variable added to the workflow. In the case of the index variable, the type is set to “Integer”. The index variable is set to “0”, to begin with.

Once the index variable, set to “0” is added to the workflow, then a loop is added as an action and titled “Loop to get items and write to list”. The actual number of times that the loop will be run will depend on the count, which was configured earlier in this workflow example. The loop is set up to run one time, the repeat count is configured to include a look up against the “Workflow Variables and Parameters” Data Source. The “Field from source” is configured as the count variable. In this manner the workflow is configured to respond dynamically to changes in the amount of data pulled from the RSS feed, over time.

The actions to be performed by the loop action are configured in very much the same manner as the GET actions that we looked at earlier in this series of blog posts. Everything is effected via a series of clicks of the mouse and some keyboard entry into the String Builder Dialog boxes. In other words, no hard coding, whatsoever is required to put together this feature.

The workflow is subsequently configured to actually produce the text strings required to populate the custom list that will expose the updated feed to users through SharePoint 2013.

Of course, it is very useful to have a technique like this one in video format as it is very likely that a significant amount of review will be required in order to successfully replicate all of the actions included in the workflow. In fact we would be hard pressed to determine how someone studying this technique could successfully assimilate it simply from written text. If collaboration is an objective for an organization considering an implementation of SharePoint 2013, then this video training course is certainly worth a review.
