A Practical, Hands On Demonstration of How to Visualize Excel 2013 Data with Power View and Store It with SharePoint Server 2013

In a short, six minute and 39 second video tutorial titled Visualize your Excel data in SharePoint using Power View, Asif Rehmani, SharePoint MVP, MCT, and CEO of SharePoint-Videos demonstrates how to transform numbers on an Excel 2013 spreadsheet into a useful visual presentation — in chart form –via the Power View feature of Excel. Once the visualization has been created, Asif demonstrates how to add it to SharePoint server.

While all of this may seem trivial, especially given the very short length of the video tutorial, it is, unfortunately, not. This writer attempted to transform the data reposed in a large Excel 2013 spread sheet into a chart, once again, with Power View 2013, and could get no farther along than to format a title for the visualization, and stare at a list of column numbers, which were presented as unnamed fields, by the Power View component.

So anyone looking to capitalize on the enhanced Business Intelligence (BI) data collecting capabilities of Excel 2013 and SharePoint 2013, or SharePoint Online, Office 365, will likely benefit from this tutorial.

For organizations with either a Group ID, or Multi-User subscription to all of the content on SharePoint-Videos, subscription administrators can add this video tutorial to a curated set of content on BI, which, in turn, can be exposed to subscription users in the form of a web page of links, which will help to simplify their method of accessing content on our web site.

Opting to curate our content into a set like this one on BI will support an effort to help users maintain a task-specific focus on getting the training they need, directly within a SharePoint computing context. Users will open the clickable links page in one browser window, while they continue to work on their SharePoint tasks in another, so the training can be accomplished “in-context”.

When this content is added to relevant, more conceptual training content on related topics, stakeholders in a BI data collection effort, for a specific organization, will benefit from a granular, hands-on, presentation of how to create graphic depictions of relationships between numbers (in other words, visualizations), while still attending to the need to design a truly useful implementation plan for the effort.
