SharePoint 2010 Search Requirement Planning Basics

SharePoint Search must be carefully planned to include several essential components for a successful implementation. The intended audience for this video tutorial are SharePoint Administrators and stakeholders. Most of the work amounts to capacity planning for performance, scalability, availability and security. It makes sense to add budgeting to this list.

For some organizations it may make sense to provision an entirely separate farm to support the search feature. So-called “query performance”, which amounts to a metric for how fast the search feature returns results, is a useful indicator of whether the search infrastructure is adequate given the volume of search activities from the SharePoint user community. As with most other online activities, users searching SharePoint repositories for information do not want to wait. So it makes sense for stakeholders to provision an adequate supporting infrastructure to handle real life search activity. Robert Piddocke recommends a system which will serve results within a second of a submitted query.

The other metric useful as an indicator of the health, or lack of health, of the search infrastructure is crawl performance. A large volume of data requires a crawl service fast enough to maintain the “freshness” of search results. Users can’t wait days for indexes to be updated. So stakeholders need to plan on whatever is required to support a crawl service capable of promptly indexing realistic volumes of data.

What needs to be avoided, of course, is user frustration with the search service, if the service is to contribute to efforts to hasten user adoption of SharePoint computing and then support their ongoing use of the platform.
