Microsoft Partners Working On a Collaboration and Content Competency May Want to Study Business Connectivity Services (BCS)

In a post to the U.S. Partner Team Blog on Technet, titled
‘Build your SharePoint business with the Collaboration and Content competency’
, Diane Golshan of Microsoft writes: ‘implementing business-critical solutions with line-of-business (LOB) data coming from disparate systems surfaced in SharePoint’ is an example of one of the ‘tremendous opportunities’ in front of U.S. partners who successfully achieve Silver,or Gold certification for this new partner specialty.

Of course the technology required to “[surface LOB data] in SharePoint” would not be possible without the Business Connectivity Service (BCS). BCS has been a component of SharePoint server since the 2010 edition, and incorporates the Business Data Connector (BDC), which was introduced with SharePoint Server 2007. As anyone running a query of our SharePoint-Videos online repository of training content for the keyword BCS will note, we offer 8 video tutorials on this SharePoint service.

Four of the tutorials were authored by Raymond Mitchell in 2011. These video tutorials are included in our “SP 301 – Get access to Line of Business Application Data using Business Connectivity Services” course.

Steve Fox, a Services Director at Microsoft, authored another couple of these tutorials. Steve’s videos are included in our “SP13-311 SharePoint 2013: Beginning Development” course (in fact Steve Fox authored all of the training published in this course).

Asif Rehmani, SharePoint MVP, MCT, and owner of SharePoint-Videos authored a 7th tutorial on this topic, titled “Creating an Instance of a Service Application” in October, 2010.

Finally, we also offer a recording of a webinar, led by Raymond Mitchell, titled “Leveraging Business Connectivity Services”, which took place in February, 2011.

All of the above content is available to anyone with a current subscription to our site.

We are also pleased to announce an online course, titled Working with External Data in SharePoint 2013 using BCS and Workflows – On premises and Online. This course will be led by Fabian C. Williams, SharePoint Server MVP, and held on July 1, 2014. Anyone wishing to register for this course can do so directly from the web page to which the hot link in this paragraph will take the reader.
